Smaller sculptures are the winners of the Life on the Green Competition and will be rotated to Green River businesses throughout the year. A short explanation of each will offer viewing opportunities for citizens.
"Having Her Way" by Jeff Rudolph was the competition's winning sculpture in 2005. It has a retail value of $2,400, but is for sale by the Green River Arts Council for $1,550, with a limited number available at this price.
"Catch of the Day" by Bobbie Carlyle was the competition winner of 2006. It's retail value is $2,100 and is for sale by the Green River Arts Council for $1,450, with a limited number available at this price.
"Willing to Fly" by James Lynxwiler was the competition winner of 2007. It's retail value $2,400 but is for sale by the Green River Arts Council for $1,550, with a limited number available at this price.
"The Outlook" by Scot Weir is an oil painting of Tollgate Rock located west of Green River. It was
competition winner and GRAC choice for 2008. There will be a limited number of prints available for purchase.
"Wild & Free" is a larger than life-sized horse sculpture by Green River artist Rudy Gunter. An ideal placement of the sculpture would be in front of the Hampton Inn up Wild Horse Canyon Road, west of Green River and just off I-80. Before the Hampton Inn was built, Randy Walker, a Green River City Councilman, Janet Hartford, Director of the Chamber of Commerce and others talked with hotel management during their groundbreaking and suggested a piece of artwork as part of their landscape plan. The idea was a motivation for the large
sculpture that Rudy calls "wild and free," a portrayal that wild horses live freely and untamed on high desert land. The sculpture depicts a stallion that was spooked by a red-tailed hawk and rears up in response. This would be a great addition to the beginning of Wild Horse Loop, a road that winds its way up past White Mountain where wild horses have been seen.
A smaller version of the large sculpture, called a "maquette" is available to the public for purchase. Each "Wild & Free" maquette has a retail value of $2,400, but limited numbers are available from the Green River Arts Council for $1,650 each.
Proceeds from the maquettes go toward the larger than life-sized sculpture, and are tax deductible through the Green River Community chest, a 501 (c)3, non profit organization. Those interested in purchasing a maquette can call Parks and Recreation Supervisor,
Alyssa Krumholz at 872-0580.
The 5th Annual Art on the Green will be held August 21st and 22, 2009 at the Expedition Island Park Pavilion.
Last year's performing group The Muses, in conjunction with the Sweetwater County Library, will again provide a celtic experience in the spring of 2009. This was very popular.
